Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii introduces the book and its themes by describing how his wounds transformed him and impacted his career and his life. After losing his arm as a decorated combat veteran in World War II, he earned the Medal of Honor, to service in the Army with his disability, obtained both his bachelor’s and law degrees on the G.I. Bill, and then went on to a remarkable career as the first congressman to represent the state of Hawaii and then as Senator for eight consecutive terms. Daniel K. Inouye, a recipient of the Medal of Honor, served with the legendary 442nd Regimental Combat Team during World War II, and was discharged with the rank of Captain. Since 1963, he has represented the state of Hawaii in the U.S. Senate and achieved prominence as one of the chamber’s most effective members.
